Description :
13 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London WC2A 3BP 6pm for 6.30pm start. In the 18th century, Hyde Park Corner came to be regarded as, de facto, the new western entrance to London. Many people thought that London was demeaned by its lack of great monuments, in particular, its lack of grand gateways. Ambitious designs for the area were produced by Giacomo Leoni, Robert Adam and Jeffry Wyatt, culminating in a number of schemes of megalomaniac grandeur by Sir John Soane. In the event, Decimus Burton's more modest scheme for an arch and screen facing each other over Piccadilly was carried out. The history of Hyde Park Corner is one of ambitious visions, leading to flawed and compromised realisations.
