Professor Burland will describe how British engineering know-how has helped avert a collapse of the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, solving a problem that has baffled engineers for centuries. Starting with a brief history of the construction and subsequent behaviour of the Tower, the Professor will go on to explain how short term measures have improved its safety, and how a more controversial method of permanent stabilisation has allowed it to be reopened to the public. |
